The journey

Fly into Lhasa, spend three nights at 3,650 m before going anywhere near the plateau, and see the Potala and Jokhang while your body catches up. Then west by road through Shigatse to Mansarovar and the parikrama. Longer, considerably more expensive, and the gentlest way onto the mountain.

Before you book

Official access
Same permit reality as the overland route, with one addition: the Kathmandu–Lhasa flight is limited and permit-linked, so late bookings genuinely cannot be accommodated however much is offered. Nothing about the Chinese border is within our control or the operator's.
Physical grade
Severe on the parikrama, considerably gentler getting there. The same 42 km at 4,600–5,630 m, but reached with three nights at Lhasa and a night at Shigatse behind you, which materially improves who finishes.
Senior & access fit
The better Kailash for an older traveller who is otherwise fit, precisely because of the acclimatisation. Still needs a doctor's clearance and no cardiac history. The parikrama itself is unchanged and unforgiving.
Meals & observance
Vegetarian throughout, satvik on the western sectors. Lhasa and Shigatse have proper Indian vegetarian kitchens; further west the group menu is simple and fixed.
When it runs
May–September only. Saga Dawa and full-moon departures are the most sought after.

What stands out

  • Three nights in Lhasa first — the most effective acclimatisation on any Kailash routing
  • Potala Palace, Jokhang temple and the Barkhor
  • Tashilhunpo monastery at Shigatse
  • Lake Mansarovar and the three-day parikrama
  • Flown into altitude rather than driven, which suits some travellers far better

  • This is the NEPAL/Lhasa route. The Government of India's own Kailash Mansarovar Yatra is a separate, ballot-allocated MEA programme and cannot be bought from any agent, including us.
  • Tibet permits and flights are subject to Chinese authority and can be withdrawn at no notice.
  • Temple access, queue length and timing on the day are decided by the temple and its administration — never by us. We apply through official channels for whatever is genuinely bookable, and we tell you before you travel if it has not come through.
