Kashi, Ayodhya and Prayagraj
The oldest living city, and the two that answer to it.

The journey
Three nights in Varanasi because one is not enough to see it twice — once at dawn from the water and once on foot after dark. Then the sangam at Prayagraj and two nights at Ayodhya. Flown in to Varanasi and out of Ayodhya, so no day is spent retracing the road.
Before you book
- Official access
- Kashi Vishwanath and Ram Janmabhoomi are both open queue with free entry, and both run security screening that bars phones and bags — we tell you exactly what can be carried. Where a paid special-entry or aarti pass genuinely exists we apply for it and name the cost; where it does not, we say so. Anyone offering a guaranteed skip at either temple is selling something that is not theirs.
- Physical grade
- Moderate, and it is standing rather than walking that decides it. Expect 45–90 minutes queueing at Kashi Vishwanath and at Ram Janmabhoomi, plus uneven stone lanes in old Varanasi and steps down to the ghats. No altitude.
- Senior & access fit
- Suitable for most older travellers, with two caveats: the dawn boat means a 4:30 start, and the temple queues involve standing without a seat. Wheelchair access at the Kashi Vishwanath corridor is good; the old-city lanes are not wheelchair passable at all.
- Meals & observance
- Pure vegetarian is the default and is easy everywhere on this route. Varanasi and Ayodhya both have no-onion-garlic kitchens; we contract it with the hotel rather than asking on arrival.
- When it runs
- October–March. April–June regularly exceeds 45°C and we will not sell this route in it.
What stands out
- Dawn boat on the Ganga, and the Ganga aarti from the water rather than the step
- Kashi Vishwanath, with the corridor route and the timing explained before you go
- The sangam at Prayagraj by boat
- Two nights at Ayodhya — Ram Janmabhoomi, Hanuman Garhi and the Saryu ghats
- Open-jaw routing: in to Varanasi, home from Ayodhya
