Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan: visas and a first route for Indian travellers
Three countries, three visa systems and two closed borders. How to put them into one trip without planning around a crossing that doesn't open.

In this guide
The short version
- Georgia: an e-visa, or no visa at all for 90 days if you hold a valid US, UK, Schengen or certain other visas. Tourists need health insurance from 2026.
- Armenia: an e-visa in three working days. It is simplest if you hold a valid US, UK, Schengen or similar visa.
- Azerbaijan: the ASAN e-visa, three working days, for a stay of up to 30 days. Its land borders are closed, so arrive and leave by air.
- Armenia and Azerbaijan share no open border. Link the three by road through Georgia and by air to Baku.
Georgia
Indian citizens can apply on Georgia's official e-visa portal. The fee is USD 20 plus a 2% service charge, and the portal says to allow at least five working days for a decision. In 2026 it added an identity check called DuVerify, at USD 15 per applicant, to be completed within 24 hours of applying. Our Georgia visa guide keeps the current fee and documents.
You may not need a visa at all. Georgia lets you stay 90 days in any 180 if you hold a valid visa or residence permit from the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Israel, any EU country, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or one of the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries.
Since 1 January 2026, Georgia's Law on Tourism has required tourists to hold health and accident insurance for their stay. Buy it before you fly and keep the policy with you.

Armenia
Armenia's embassy in India says Indian citizens can apply for an e-visa on the official portal, with a decision in three working days. It costs AMD 3,000 for a 21-day stay or AMD 15,000 for 120 days.
It is simplest if you hold a valid visa or residence permit from the EU or Schengen area, the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, Japan, Russia or a Gulf Cooperation Council country; with one of those, a visa on arrival is also possible. Without one, the embassy asks for an invitation, a return ticket and a bank statement. Travel insurance is required either way.
Azerbaijan
Indian citizens can use Azerbaijan's ASAN e-visa: USD 20 plus a USD 9 service fee, issued in three working days, or in three hours at the urgent rate. It is single entry, valid for 90 days, for a stay of up to 30 days.
Azerbaijan's land borders have been closed to regular travellers since 2020, and the closure has been extended repeatedly; the current extension runs to 1 October 2026. Plan to fly into and out of Baku. The Baku–Tbilisi train restarted in May 2026, but its tickets are limited to Azerbaijani citizens and visa-free nationalities, which rules it out on an e-visa.
The border problem, and the route that works
Armenia and Azerbaijan have no open border between them, and the border between Türkiye and Armenia is closed too. The two countries initialled a peace agreement in August 2025, but by mid-2026 nothing had changed for travellers.
That makes Georgia the hinge. Tbilisi and Yerevan are linked by road; Baku is reached by air. A first trip of ten nights could run like this:
- Fly into Baku. Three nights for the old city and the Caspian waterfront.
- Fly on to Tbilisi. Four nights, with a day in the mountains at Kazbegi.
- Drive south to Yerevan. Three nights, with a day out to Lake Sevan or the monasteries.
- Fly home from Yerevan.
Or keep it simpler: Georgia and Armenia together by road, and Azerbaijan as a trip of its own.
When to go
Late April to May and late September to early November are the most comfortable months for touring. For snow, Gudauri in Georgia has a ski season from early December to mid-April, and Shahdag in Azerbaijan from December to the end of March.
Getting there from India
Flights to the region have been disrupted in 2026. IndiGo suspended its Tbilisi and Baku services in January because of airspace restrictions, and a restart date isn't confirmed. Azerbaijan Airlines flies nonstop to Baku from Delhi and Mumbai. We found no nonstop flight from India to Yerevan, so expect at least one connection there. We check what is actually flying when we plan your dates.
Tell us whether you want one country or all three, and which visas you already hold; that decides the route more than anything else. Start with Georgia, Armenia or Azerbaijan.
