The journey

Three nights in Chiang Mai and one in Chiang Rai — a full day at an ethical elephant sanctuary, Doi Suthep on the mountain above the city, the old walled centre, and then the road north for the white temple and the hill country. The north reads nothing like the islands: three hundred metres up, cool after dark, forested ridges instead of limestone, and a kingdom that predates Bangkok by five centuries.

What stands out

  • A full day at an ethical elephant sanctuary — no riding and no performances
  • Doi Suthep on the mountain road, and the old walled city the same day
  • The road north to Chiang Rai, and the white temple at the end of it
  • One night in Chiang Rai itself, in the hill country rather than back in the city

Day by day

How the 5 days actually run.

  1. Day 01

    Chiang Mai

Arrive, transfer, check in. Nothing scheduled — the old town inside the moat is small enough to walk in an evening.

    Chiang Mai

  2. Day 02

    The elephant sanctuary

A full day at an ethical sanctuary: preparing food, feeding, and walking out into the forest with the herd and their keepers, with lunch there. There is no riding and no bathing show. What the elephants choose to do that day is up to them, which is the point of the place.

  3. Day 03

Doi Suthep and the old city

Up the mountain road to Doi Suthep in the morning, the terrace and the view back over the valley, then down into the walled centre — Wat Phra Singh, Wat Chedi Luang, the moat and the old gates.

  4. Day 04

    North to Chiang Rai

About three hours north through the hills, with the white temple, Wat Rong Khun, on the way in. The afternoon is in the hill country around Chiang Rai, and you sleep there rather than driving back.

  5. Day 05

    Home from Chiang Rai

Transfer to Chiang Rai airport. The trip arrives at one northern airport and leaves from the other.

What's not

  • Both domestic Thai flights this routing needs — into Chiang Mai and out of Chiang Rai, each connecting through Bangkok. We book them for you; they are not inside the price shown
  • International flights
  • Visa fees and processing
  • Travel insurance
  • Meals not named in the itinerary
  • Personal expenses, tips and porterage
  • Peak-season and festive surcharges (Jul–Aug surcharges quoted separately)
  • Anything not listed under Inclusions
  • Land only · per person · twin share
  • Minimum 2 travellers
  • Rates are subject to availability and confirmation at the time of booking
  • Indian passport holders currently enter Thailand visa-free for up to 30 days — we confirm the position in force for your dates before you book
  • Thailand requires an electronic arrival card to be filed before you fly — we send you the link and the deadline with your documents
  • February to April is burning season in the north: crop and forest smoke can hold air quality low for weeks and take the ridge views with it. We will tell you plainly if your dates fall inside it — the cool dry months from November to January are the ones to aim for
  • The sanctuary is a sanctuary, not a show. No riding, no bathing performance, the herd is not brought out on cue, and we make no promise about what you will see on the day
  • Doi Suthep is reached by a mountain road and then a long naga staircase, with a funicular alongside it, and the temple applies a dress code — shoulders and knees covered
