The journey

Munneswaram and Manavari, where Rama is said to have installed the lingam; Seetha Amman at the spring where she was held; Divurumpola where the trial took place; and Kataragama, which Tamils and Sinhalese and Muslims all walk to. A short flight from Chennai and a version of the Ramayana most Indians have never stood inside.

Before you book

Official access
Every temple on this route is open access with free darshan; the Temple of the Tooth, Peradeniya and Hakgala charge a ticket and those are included. The Temple of the Tooth's thevava happens three times a day at fixed hours and we build the day around them, because arriving between them means seeing a closed shrine.
Physical grade
Easy to moderate. Short walks at every temple, some steps and barefoot stone at the Temple of the Tooth and Kataragama. Hill-country roads are winding — worth knowing if anyone in the group gets carsick.
Senior & access fit
Good. Comfortable vehicle, short walking, no altitude and no trekking. Temples require shoes off, which means warm stone underfoot in the middle of the day; we schedule around it. Sri Pada — Adam's Peak — is a 5,500-step night climb and is NOT part of this journey; we will arrange it separately for anyone who genuinely wants it, in the December–May season only.
Meals & observance
Pure vegetarian arranged throughout, and Tamil-speaking staff are easy to find on this route. Kataragama observance is stricter — many pilgrims fast and bathe in the Menik Ganga before darshan, and we will explain what is expected rather than let you discover it.
When it runs
Year-round on this routing. The Kataragama Esala festival in July or August is the high point of the year and books out early.
