Vietnam, Hanoi on Foot

Three nights in one city, mostly on foot, mostly eating.

Duration
4 days · 3 nights
Destination
Vietnam
Starting from
₹25,000 pp

The journey

The entry-tier Hanoi. A half-day of the city's set pieces, an evening at the Thang Long water puppet theatre, a street-food walk through the Old Quarter, and a coffee beside the track on Train Street where the barriers are open on the day. The hotel is in the Old Quarter, which means the unscheduled half of this trip is the good half — you walk out of the door and you have already arrived.

What stands out

  • Half a day of the city — the Ho Chi Minh complex, the One Pillar Pagoda, the Temple of Literature, and Hoan Kiem lake with Ngoc Son temple
  • An evening at the Thang Long water puppet theatre — a fifty-minute show, performed waist-deep in water
  • A guided street-food walk through the Old Quarter, eating standing up
  • Coffee beside the track on Train Street, when the barriers are open

Day by day

How the 4 days actually run.

  1. Day 01

    Hanoi

Arrive, transfer, check in, and nothing scheduled. You are inside the Old Quarter — the evening looks after itself.

    Hanoi old quarter

  2. Day 02

    The city, then the puppets

Half a day of Hanoi — the Ho Chi Minh complex and the One Pillar Pagoda, the Temple of Literature, then Hoan Kiem lake and Ngoc Son temple. The afternoon is free, and the water puppet show is in the evening.

  3. Day 03

Train Street, then dinner on foot

Coffee beside the track on Train Street in the morning, timed off that day's schedule. The afternoon is yours, and the Old Quarter street-food walk runs in the evening.

  4. Day 04

    Home

The morning is free, then the airport.

What's included

  • 3 nights in a 4★ hotel in the Old Quarter district with breakfast
  • Half-day Hanoi city tour — Ho Chi Minh complex, One Pillar Pagoda, Temple of Literature, Hoan Kiem lake and Ngoc Son temple
  • Thang Long water puppet show — we book the sitting, and the theatre allocates the seats
  • Old Quarter street-food walk with a guide, and the food tasted along it
  • Train Street coffee stop with your guide, one coffee included, subject to the barriers being open on the day — the city closes the track-side cafés periodically and without notice
  • All airport transfers
  • Sightseeing on a private basis, by car with an English-speaking guide
  • Entrance fees wherever applicable

What's not

  • Anything ordered beyond what the itinerary names on the food walk and at the coffee stop
  • International flights
  • Visa fees and processing
  • Travel insurance
  • Meals not named in the itinerary
  • Personal expenses, tips and porterage
  • Peak-season and festive surcharges (Jul–Aug surcharges quoted separately)
  • Anything not listed under Inclusions
  • Land only · per person · twin share
  • Minimum 2 travellers
  • Rates are subject to availability and confirmation at the time of booking
  • Indian passport holders require a visa for Vietnam — there is no visa-free entry. The e-visa covers up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, and is applied for online; we file it for you and the fee is not inside the price shown
  • Vietnam's domestic flight baggage allowance is lower than your international ticket — we tell you the limit for your routing before you pack
  • The Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum is closed on Mondays and Fridays, and shuts for several weeks of maintenance in the autumn. When it is closed we see the complex from outside, which is how the half-day is written either way
  • This is three nights in one city by design — there is no day trip out of Hanoi inside it. Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay both need a fourth night to be worth doing, and we would rather tell you that now than sell you a rushed one
  • Hanoi is genuinely cold and grey in December and January, and hot and wet in July and August. March to April and October to November are the two windows that suit most people
