The extra night is Hoi An after dark, which is the part people describe when they get home.
The four-night version of this route with a third night in Da Nang, and that night exists to buy one specific day: the Marble Mountains in the morning, Hoi An Ancient Town on foot in the afternoon, and then staying on through the lanterns for a boat on the river. Hanoi is unchanged at two nights — the Old Quarter, Train Street and the water puppets. If you want Ha Long Bay as well, that is the six-night version of the same trip.

Arrive, transfer, and the Son Tra peninsula in the late afternoon for Lady Buddha at Linh Ung and the road round the headland.
A full day up at Ba Na — the cable car, the Golden Bridge, the gardens and the summit village. Back in the city by evening.
