Vietnam, Sapa and the High North

The morning your legs tell you exactly how far you walked yesterday, and you go again anyway.

The journey

Six nights built on the two things Vietnam does that nothing else in Southeast Asia does: the Hoang Lien Son mountains in the north, and the Truong Son range dropping into the sea at the Hai Van Pass. A full day's trek through the Ta Van valley, the Fansipan cable car to 3,143 m, then Ba Na Hills and the Marble Mountains at the Da Nang end. It is a walking holiday with a cable car in it, not a sightseeing tour with one hill.

What stands out

  • Ba Na Hills and the Golden Bridge, reached by one of the longest single-cable systems in the world
  • A full day trekking the Ta Van valley — roughly 10 to 12 km, real descent and ascent, farm paths and paddy bunds
  • Fansipan by Sun World cable car to 3,143 m, then the 600 steps to the summit marker, or the funicular that skips most of them
  • The Hai Van Pass driven over the top rather than through the tunnel, and the Am Phu cave descent inside the Marble Mountains

Day by day

How the 7 days actually run.

  1. Day 01

    Hanoi

Arrive and transfer in. The evening is yours — an Old Quarter street food walk can be booked if your flight is in early.

    Hanoi old quarter

  2. Day 02

    Hanoi to Sapa, and Fansipan

Morning transfer up to Sapa by limousine van, about five and a half hours on the expressway and then the mountain road. Afternoon at Sun World Fansipan Legend — the cable car to the upper station, then 600 steps to the summit marker or the funicular for most of them. At 3,143 m it is cold and often inside cloud; the view is a matter of luck and we will not pretend otherwise.

  3. Day 03

    Ta Van valley

The trekking day. Down through Lao Chai and Ta Van on farm tracks, earth bunds between the paddy terraces and two or three stream crossings, with lunch in the valley. Roughly 10 to 12 km over five to six hours, about 300 m of descent and the same again coming out. Graded in full below. A shorter valley loop is the alternative and we build it in if you tell us before you travel.

  4. Day 04

    Sapa to Da Nang

An early start back down to Hanoi, then the afternoon flight to Da Nang. A long travel day by design — it buys the third night in the south rather than a second night in Hanoi.

  5. Day 05

    Ba Na Hills

A full day at Ba Na Hills — the cable car, the Golden Bridge, the gardens and the French village at the top. Early is the answer to the crowds and we will have you on the first cars.

Ba Na Hills · Da Nang

  6. Day 06

Hai Van Pass and the Marble Mountains

North over the Hai Van Pass on the old road, stopping at the top, then back for the Marble Mountains — the steps up Thuy Son, the Am Phu cave descent by torchlight, and Son Tra peninsula and Lady Buddha at the end of the afternoon.

  7. Day 07

    Departure

    Transfer to Da Nang airport.

What's not

  • The Hanoi to Da Nang domestic flight this routing needs. We book it for you; it is not inside the price shown
  • The Thuy Son lift at the Marble Mountains, if you would rather not take the steps — a small fee paid on the spot
  • International flights
  • Visa fees and processing
  • Travel insurance
  • Meals not named in the itinerary
  • Personal expenses, tips and porterage
  • Peak-season and festive surcharges (Jul–Aug surcharges quoted separately)
  • Anything not listed under Inclusions
  • Land only · per person · twin share
  • Minimum 2 travellers
  • Rates are subject to availability and confirmation at the time of booking
  • Indian passport holders require a visa for Vietnam — there is no visa-free entry. The e-visa covers up to 90 days, single or multiple entry, and is applied for online; we file it for you and the fee is not inside the price shown
  • Vietnam's domestic flight baggage allowance is lower than your international ticket — we tell you the limit for your routing before you pack
  • On this routing we normally ticket you into Hanoi and out of Da Nang rather than as a round trip — the same open-jaw logic as the Saigon itineraries, and it saves you the backtrack north
  • THE TREKKING, GRADED: the Ta Van day is 10 to 12 km over five to six hours on unmade ground — farm paths, earth bunds a foot wide between paddy terraces, loose rock and stream crossings, with about 300 m of descent and the same ascent. There are no handrails and no vehicle access for most of it. It suits someone who walks regularly and is steady on uneven ground. It does not suit anyone who needs a level surface or a handhold, and we will not put a traveller on it who has told us their knees or hips are a problem — tell us and we build the shorter loop instead. After rain the clay is genuinely slippery
  • Sapa sits at about 1,500 m and Fansipan at 3,143 m — cold, windy and often inside cloud between November and March, and wet between June and August. February to May and September to November are the months that work; September is when the terraces turn gold
  • The Fansipan cable car and the Ba Na Hills cable car both close in high wind or storms, at the operator's call. No cable car anywhere can be guaranteed for a given day, ours included
